What you need to know about before, during and after lips permanent makeup.

You are not a candidate for permanent makeup if, you have keloid scaringYou are not a candidate for permanent makeup if, you have keloid scaringPermanent Lip Color

Beautiful sensual lips are created by adding natural color where needed, achieving instant fullness and definition. Subtle corrections can be made to thin, uneven or unsymmetrical lips and the size and shape can be altered as desired. Facial lines around the mouth are instantly camouflaged and lipstick bleed is eliminated.

Many people request color similar to that of an infant – a very natural soft pinkish/red. Others desire a more dramatic effect. During your consultation you can discuss how much color you desire. The intensity of desired color will determine the amount of touch-ups that will be required. Most lip procedures require at least one touch up.

How long does the procedure take?

The appointment is scheduled for 2 1/2. Applying lip color is the most laborious of all permanent makeup procedures. Lips are muscles, different than skin.

* When you arrive to your appointment Irina will immediately get your numbing cream on (this is a Lignocaine & Tetracaine based product.)  During the numbing process (approximately 30 minutes) you will fill out your consent form if you haven’t done this at a pre-consultation

* Irina will take a before picture and will now be ready to chat about your desired look and color.  Your lips may be a little tender to start with, but once the process is underway, Irina will use a different type of numbing gel which will be very effective as it penetrates the open skin, alleviating the discomfort for most clients.

* Once finished with the tattooing, you'll discuss aftercare, and take some photos to compare your pre and post procedure.

Perfecting Session

Irina will see you in 4-8 weeks for your perfecting session.  The time between appointments gives the skin time to heal and lets the color settle.  The second appointment will not take as long.  Irina will see how your skin has held the pigment and can make any adjustments to color or shape as needed. But really this appointment is exactly as described- it's all about the perfecting of your new lips.

How long does healing take?

Healing usually takes about a week. However, please allow a few days if you have an event or special occasion coming up. Irina tells clients not to micro-analyze their lips until 30 days as that is when you will know your completely-healed pigment.  Your new permanent lips will go through several phases during the healing cycle.  The pigment will appear very bright and bold immediately after the procedure. This is because the pigment is still sitting on top of your skin, and has not yet settled in completely. The pigment for lips has to be brighter and bolder so that it will heal to a seen color. The color of the pigment will soften gradually, and you may see some pigment on your towel after washing your face, or on your pillowcase - do not be alarmed.  Once the healing of the skin starts taking place, the lips may become chapped and peel. This might give you the impression that the color pigment is fading too quickly; however, this is just superficial color and dry skin being naturally removed from your lips. After a couple of days, this will subside. Don’t pick or scratch. Once completely healed, you are strongly encouraged to apply a layer of sunscreen SPF 30 up to SPF 50 on your lips when exposed to the sun, as sun exposure might cause the color pigment to fade away more quickly.

Does it hurt?

Of all permanent makeup procedures, lip coloring is the most sensitive.  Numbing cream and gel are used liberally throughout the procedure.  It is more uncomfortable than painful. Please take a few Tylenol 30 minutes before procedure.

How do you choose a color?

Irina strongly recommends "natural" lip colors. You can always enhance or change the color of your lips at anytime with conventional makeup for special occasions.  On days when you don't feel you want an actual lipstick look your "natural" permanent lip color will be your best choice.

How will I look immediately following the procedure?

Your lips will look slightly larger than normal and look as though you may have had a slight lip filler injection. The "natural" lip color, however, will look quite dark, like lipstick. You need to know that the size of your lips will shrink back to about normal and the color will significantly fade up to 50% within the first 3 days. You will lose color on the inside of your lips first, the edges last. Just remember...all procedures must HEAL, PEEL and FADE! This process may take up to 10 days.

If I have had a lip filler injection already, am I still a candidate for permanent lip color?

No, it is not recommended to do permanent lip color over lips which have had lip filler injected into them. This is because you must realize that the lip filler and the lip color will be sharing the same space within your lips. If the filler has taken up most of the space, or even some of the space, your permanent lip color will have little space for implantation, and you will have poor results.

It is recommended that you do the permanent lip color first and then the lip filler injection.

Can you enlarge my lips with permanent color by tattooing outside the natural lip line?

It’s not recommend that any lip procedure should be tattooed outside the "natural" lip line for best results. If you choose to have your lips tattooed fuller than they actually are, then be prepared to come back every 6 months or so for a "touch-up" in order to "color boost" the color on your skin above the natural lip line or else the color outside of your lip will begin to fade.

Tattooing the vermillion border (the place where your lips meet your skin) will alone enhance the size of your lips and will also look very natural.

How do I prepare for the lip procedure?

You MUST understand that if you have EVER had chicken pox, a fever blister, or a cold sore, you MUST take Zovirax, Famvir or Valtrex or other anti-viral pre and post procedure to help prevent the outbreak of cold sores. There are NO exceptions to this rule! If you do have an outbreak, it will usually occur on the third (3rd) day following lip color application. This rule holds true for each and every time you have any amount of permanent lip color applied.

You will need to call your physician in order to obtain your prescription strength anti-viral medication. You must inform them of your decision to have your lips permanently colored and they will need to call your prescription in for you to pick up at your pharmacy.

How often is a color boost or a touch-up procedure needed?

Lip color requires frequent color boosts or touch-ups as compared to other permanent makeup procedures due to the fact that the lips are very vascular and the body metabolizes the lip color at a rapid rate compared to other body parts which are not as vascularized.

What if I hold off on my lip color boost or touch-up procedure too long?

Waiting too long requires repeating the new procedure again and is priced accordingly. It is best to stay current (once a year) for lip color maintenance procedures.

Permanent lip color seems like a "high maintenance" type of procedure, am I right?

Yes, definitely, as compared to other permanent makeup procedures.

What do I need to do before my Lip treatment?

* Do not take aspirin or ibuprofen or have any alcohol 24 hours prior to and after your appointment.

* Take a non-aspirin pain reliever 30 minutes before

* Discontinue Retin A skin care products close to the lip area two weeks prior and for two weeks after your procedure.

* Discontinue use of AHA skin care products close to the brow area one week prior to your procedure.

* No waxing, laser or electrolysis one week prior to procedure.

* Stop taking fish oil and vitamin E at least 72 hours before.

What are the after-care instructions?

* You will need to continue your anti-viral medication (if you are using one) until the end of the prescription.

* You must stay out of intense sunlight for six weeks post lip color application. Then, afterwards, it is recommended to wear an SPF over your lip color to help prevent the color from fading prematurely.

* Drink through a straw for the first few days. Do not eat citrus fruits and juices, greasy, salty, oily or spicy foods until your lips are completely healed (about 2 weeks).

* While eating, do not constantly wipe your lips with a napkin or keep licking your lips as this will impede the healing process. DO NOT PICK dry healing skin tissue or you WILL remove the pigment color!

* Before brushing your teeth, first apply ointment over your lips to act as a barrier against toothpaste touching your new lip color. Also, do not bleach your teeth while your lips are healing (about 2 weeks).

* Keep your new lip color well lubricated for a minimum of two (2) weeks or longer. Petroleum products are excellent choices.

* After the initial healing period, you should apply a total sun block that is also waterproof 3-4 times daily to help prevent fading. Chap stick with SPF is an excellent choice. Available for retail.

* No smoking while your lips are healing (approximately 2 weeks).

* No kissing, rubbing or friction on your newly colored lips until the area is totally healed or else you will lose color (about 2 weeks).

Can I get permanent lips if I am pregnant?

No, you cannot have this treatment done if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
